Best Little City in Southern Calif. to Visit
Redlands, Calif. is dubbed the ‘Jewel of the Inland Empire’. The reason why the city is called the ‘jewel’ is because of the beautiful sights that Redlands has to offer. There are picturesque scenes of tall skinny palm trees, orange groves, surrounding mountains, and historical architecture.
Viewing out the outdoor scenery is great, but to really find things to do check out the French chateau-style Victorian mansion built in 1897 for Mrs. Corenelia A. Hill, one of the pioneers of Redlands. Then in 1905 John Alfred Kimberly, a co-founder of the Kimberly-Clark paper company, purchased the home and gave the property its name.
If touring is not appealing check out the historical A.K. Smiley library at the edge of down town Redlands. There is more to this library than just books. Built in 1898 by philanthropist Albert K. Smiley, the architectural elements alone are worth seeing with a blending of Mission and Moorish Revival. The curvaceous and eclectic style of the building brings in elements of Gothic, Classical, and Spanish Romanesque. The history of this building is amazing. Built in 1898 by philanthropist Albert K. Smiley, this building is considered a California Historical Landmark.
If history and touring is not of interest go check out Redlands Prospect Park. Located among rows of the city’s famous orange trees, the park starts out on a beautiful landing of mixed trees and a tiny rustic bridge. Follow the path of canopy trees up to the top of the tiny hill that overlooks the entire city. This spectacular hill top scenery alone is worth the visit to Redlands.
When hunger strikes visit the wonderful eateries located in the historic downtown Redlands off of Orange and State streets. If burgers are on the mind, check out Redland’s famous Eurika Burger. The restaurant is famous for the burgers, including the rare Bison burger, and has many local beers both in bottle and on tap.
Another quant eatery that is located downtown Redlands is The Corner Bakery. This cute little restaurant is packed with many healthy alternatives. There is a variety of salads to choose from, sandwiches, soups, pastas, and pastries. This new restaurant is the talk of the local town and many enjoy the window views looking out onto the downtown street of Orange.
But what Redlands has recently become famous for is the local breweries. A rising brewing company called Hangar 24 hit the market in popularity. Hangar 24’s signature drink is homage to the city’s famous orange groves. Orange wheat is a smooth quality beer infused with local oranges that locals go crazy over.
Other upcoming breweries in Redlands are Ritual and Donkey Punch.
Whether viewing the scenery or historical sites, or just wanting to find a place to eat and drink, Redlands, Calif. has it all packed into one beautiful little city.
